“Webster” remembers Barry Arcangeli

“Webster” and the Daniel Webster Preservation Trust, lost a dear friend last week. Barry Arcangeli, decorator, designer, collector of antiques, was a good man and a good friend. He died suddenly, and way too soon.

Remembered by DWPT President, Carol Kiburis, “Barry’s lovely displays, numerous talents and his devotion to the Daniel Webster Estate, will be missed. Barry was a generous man and spent hours perfecting his craft.”

Recommended to the Webster Estate 5 years ago by his friend and now husband, Michael, as the “right man for the job“, and that he was; as he instantly became a much admired and a much appreciated, as well as indispensable Christmas Show House decorator.  Barry’s forte and love was the restoring of antique dolls and mannequins.

And, as he yearly decorated rooms throughout the 1880 Victorian mansion that was visibly apparent.  He hunted on his days off for just the right pieces and then proceeded to refashion, redecorate, redesign, embellish and even create new items; sewing, mixing and matching, and using early 20th century outfits, gowns, dresses, and original clothing.   His chosen Christmas rooms showcased his talents.

His mannequins, male and female, and all “dressed’ by Barry, and staged so perfectly each year to tell his story. –Welcome! Come Join Us! We’re Happy You’re Here!–

He had recently texted Mickey Carr, Show House coordinator, the following,

“I picked up some large Christmas items for this year’s winter wonderland….OMG I can’t wait for Christmas.  Wait until you see the fabulous things I’ve gotten.”

We are so sad that we won’t see his new treasures. But we will remember Barry for his ever present smile, his hugs, his sweetness, his joy and Christmas spirit, his talents, and his absolutely wonderful Christmas presentations.

Tea Party. Freshly Brewed.

The Daniel Webster Estate and Heritage Center is maintained and entrusted with an all volunteer board that comprise The Daniel Webster Preservation Trust.  We are people with many diverse backgrounds and skills. We come together with a common goal to maintain, celebrate and to educate the public of, All Things Webster!

The Estate is available for celebrations such as weddings, special occasion parties as well corporate meetings and seminars.  During the first week of December interior and floral designers work their magic and the estate is transformed into a sparkling holiday wonderland. This year our theme is, “Deck the Halls!”

We also have a seasonal tradition of celebrating tea on select Sunday afternoons. Our teas have become a local favorite. With seating beginning at 2PM and the tea lasts until 4PM. Scones and seasonal breads, savories and sweets and that perfect cup(s) of properly made tea are served by Webster volunteers led by Carol Kiburis, President, DWPT.

Behind the Scenes

Before anyone arrives there are weeks of preparations made prior to the first tea guests’ arrival. The Estate must be prepared for seating, the linens are cared for and all of the silver must be polished. The silver polishing alone can take 5 or 6 people up to three visits to complete.

DWPT Board Member, Ann McAleer is our house tea sommelier. Before the first pour of tea, Anne is busy behind the scenes. With a guest list of up to 80 attendees, Ann and her team begin by brewing 32 quarts of tea, or 8 gallons. The tea cups are filled through out a two hour time frame and quite often Ann has had to brew additional 5 quarts!

Daniel Webster
Judy, a local volunteer helps with serving tea and decorating the house.

The assorted tea sandwiches, scones, seasonal breads, and a variety of desserts command a large presence in the kitchen. There are cucumber finger sandwiches, salad sandwiches, roll ups and more. The volunteers can create and plate up to 480 finger sandwiches to serve on the silver platters.

Tea bread and desserts are always plentiful. Each with a homemade flair, as if your Aunt or Grandmother had prepared them just for you. Again, this is because the Seasonal Teas are not catered by a restaurant or local caterer. The entire event is produced by your friends and neighbors who volunteer at The Daniel Webster Preservation Estate.

The DWPT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and an all-volunteer organization.
The DWPT was formed in 1989 by Jim Cantwell, Michael Donohue and Bob McCracken and incorporated it in February 1990 in order to keep the estate from development and preserve it for public use and enjoyment. Early on the Trust worked with the Historical Commission to secure the house by having it included on the National Registry of Historical Places and Trust.
In 1995, a Town Meeting voted to purchase the house and remaining 14 acres for $500,000. Half of that sum was provided by a MA state grant. The Town, through the Historical Commission and Massachusetts Historical, secured grant money to restore the mansion and in 2005 the Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth sponsored a designer show house there. The designers completed the interior decoration and some landscaping of the property.  Also in 2005, the town awarded a 3-year lease to the Trust to maintain and continue restoration of the estate and the lease was renewed for 10 years in 2009.

Thank you from DWPT 2018

2018 9-Day Christmas Designer Show House December 8-16th 2018

Thank you all for joining us this year for the 14th Annual Christmas Designer Show House at the Daniel Webster Estate, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!”

This year’s Designer Show House was a success all around. The weather was a friend and made for easy traveling to the over 1,000 visitors we entertained over 9 beautiful days.

Each of our rooms and areas has a hostess and this year we had 60-70 volunteers helping us with our guests. The DWPT thanks you all for your dedication, without you our success would not be possible.

We are thrilled that so many of you took the time to post photos on Social Media and many of you invited new friends to join you on your visit.

If you did not have the opportunity to visit, make sure you mark your calendars for next year as The Christmas Show House is an event not to be missed. Local decorators and floral designers, some professional and some amateur, some old-timers and some new to the show house; will spend many volunteer hours transforming their chosen room into a Christmas visual delight.  Decorations chosen for each room reflect that particular designer’s view of Christmas, be it traditional, historical, Victorian, fanciful, or whimsical.

Thank you to the 2018 Decorators!

Family Fun Day – Tenth Anniversary

HELD ON SUNDAY, JULY 29TH 2018

37971172_1885221751515948_5411249860533813248_n

FROM THE DESK OF CAROL KIBURIS, PRESIDENT DANIEL WEBSTER PRESERVATION TRUST

Thank you, Phyllis, and all the Nielsen family for another successful Family Fun Day.  Ten years ago you were the only member of the Webster Board of Directors who felt we should reach out to young families and open our historic house for a day of fun.  And what a hit it has been through these past 10 years.  It was quite the learning process to get started but with everyone behind you, it was pulled together and its popularity continues to thrive.

I’d like to share with you, a note from our organizer, Phyllis Nielsen.

Family Fun Day, a summer fund-raiser for the Daniel Webster Estate, has just celebrated its 10th year and I have so many people to whom I and the Estate are grateful for, and so many people I want to thank for their many years of service to this event: my family, my friends, dedicated sponsors and vendors, and the Marshfield community.

Special thank you’s to Jim Coffey of Busy Bee Jumpers, Bob Costa from BC Tent Co., Roxie’s of Quincy,  Haddad’s Cafe, Rand Handy, Kennedy’s Country Gardens, and Ground Effects who have supported FFD for all 10 years. Delicious chowders from the Bridgewaye Inn, Crest Family Catering, and Dockside Donuts for all these years. Much appreciation to Big Joe, our storyteller, who has volunteered his expertise for 10 years and to Marshfield’s finest: our Fire and Police departments for joining us every year and to Beny and Officer Reidy, our K9 team.  Much love to my sons: Jim, who provides the petting zoo with a myriad of animals yearly, and Steve, who manages the food stand, and to my group of ladies who serve chowders, collect tickets, make the delicious cookies and brownies, and finally to my  faithful committee: Ann, Barbara, Gwen, Mickey and Otis who have been with me from the start.  Also thanks to long time contributors: Millie Savage and her husband from Cluster Of Clowns of Quincy, Equine for Events, Seagate Farm, the Fantastic 4H Livestock Club, Don Vautrinot, Veterans Who Care, and the 1936 “Buffalo” fire engine, Denise’s Sand Art, the Mayo’s, the docents who oversaw the 1880 mansion, the Carriage House, and Law Office, Atlantis Pest Services, and everyone else who pitched in to set up, dismantle, and clean up.  And this year again thanks to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Dept who provided over 50 Children’s ID sets to parents.  Thanks also to Wally, the Green Monster from the Red Sox, Rainforest Reptiles, and to Michael Page and the Weekend Weather Warrior truck from NECN. THANK YOU MARSHFIELD!

The 10th Anniversary of Family Fun Day brought with it many new faces. I wish to welcome and thank our more recent friends, donors and sponsors; South Shore Therapies, Radius Financial Advisors, Brant Rock Market, C&C Advisors, Cask n’ Flagon, Green Harbor Golf Club, Salty Dog Daycare and Grooming, and Sea Greene Art, Design + Media Mktg. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you again next year in 2019!

We hope that South Shore families will look back on those Sundays when they were children and remember all the good times at the Daniel Webster Estate.

Respectfully yours,

Carol Kiburis, President DWPT

The Daniel Webster Law Office was at the 1699 Winslow House property for 50 years having been moved there for safe keeping while a day camp was held at the Webster Estate.  It has been returned and the Marshfield historical Commission held a rededication event at the Daniel Webster Estate on Sunday, August 19 2018.

The Law Office is frequently open in conjunction with the Estate.

Daniel Webster Estate
We had a lovely turn out from town members and many public officials were in attendance.

Otis Carney, Marshfield Historical Commission Chair gave a brief talk on moving the building and discovering the well believed to be circa 1780 and original to the property.

James Cantwell was Master of Ceremonies.

Cynthia Krussell, Town Historian delivered her recollections of how the preservation took place.

Town Administrator, Michael Maresco who provided advice and assistance during his tenure at Massachusetts Historical Commission and now through the Town of Marshfield also addressed the attendees.
